KUTAMA TRIBE: Yahya b. Sulayman, from 910, AR dirham (1.01g), Madinat Sulayman, AHxx7 (probably AH297), A-S453, citing only Yahya b. Sulayman, and struck at Madinat Sulayman, now called Soliman and located about 30km east of Tunis; Yahya was later assigned by the Fatimid Imam al-Mahdi as governor at Tubna in eastern Algeria, south of Constantine; unpublished and unique! VF, RRRR. The Kutama were a branch of the Berber families in North Africa, centered at Constantine, but active at various locations in eastern Algeria and northern Tunisia. This is the first coin known that can be confidently assigned to the Kutama tribe of the Berbers.
