LOWER CANADA: Banque du Peuple, AE halfpenny token (9.02g), 1837, KM-Tn8, Charlton-LC-8C1, Breton-522, overstruck on 1806-7 Great Britain halfpenny! (KM-662), V and I of PROVINCE in line, engrailed edge (a regular issue should be plain edged), VF to EF, RRR, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. To our knowledge, this is the first known habitant halfpenny token struck over a British halfpenny. A look at all the search engines and the internet turned up no other specimens. There are also other curious marks on the rims which may indicate another strike somewhere in the chronology. It is curious why this host coin was used, as the mintage of 240,000 pieces at Boulton & Watt would indicate a good supply of fresh planchets. A very fascinating piece!
