MADAGASCAR: Ranavalona III, 1883-1897, AR kirobo, 1888, KM-X4, Gad-5, Lec-8, pattern for unrealized coinage, medallic strike, a superb lustrous example! PCGS graded Specimen 65, ex Charles W. Lueders III Collection. In 1886, an agreement had been made by the Hova government with the United Kingdon to manufacture 50,000 piastres, but the deal failed following the intervention of the French Resident Le Myre de Vilers who ordered new coins from the Monnaie de Paris. There were two versions strikes, the first in 1886 and the second in 1888, in modules of 5 francs and 1 franc. These types were designed by Ramanankirahina, designer of the Queen and former student of the Beaux-Arts of Paris. In 1889, negotiations resumed between the Malagasy government and a French engineer, Mr. Rigaud. The contract was for 2 million silver coins but could not be realized, although samples had been struck at the Monnaie de Paris.
