MADRAS PRESIDENCY: AE ½ dudu (3.17g), KM-285, struck at Madras by the British East India Company for use at Benkulen (Fort York) on Sumatra, EF. The Bencoolen Presidency was a British possession in Sumatra based in the area of what is now Bengkulu City. In 1785 it was downgraded to Bencoolen Residency and placed under the Bengal Presidency. The British ceded Fort Marlborough and Benculen (Bengkulu) to the Dutch as part of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824. The type is variously dated from the 1680s to the early 1700s.
