MAGADHA: Punchmarked, ca. 450-430 BC, AR heavy vimshatika (5.42g), GH-022 (this piece), Four punches: central 6-arm symbol, sun, tree, and crescent with 5 pellets, plus 1 bankers' mark on obverse and one on reverse, choice VF-XF, RR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection, from our Auction 17, lot 991. All punchmarked coins of Magadha bear the 6-arm symbol and the sun. The first series, with 4 punches, bore a large 6-arm symbol in the center and three smaller punches around, including the sun, heavy vimshatikas of about 5.45g issued circa 450-430 BC, followed by a briefly used standard vimshatika of about 4.70g. These were replaced by a 5-punch series with the karshapana weight of about 3.40g, used roughly 420-350 BC or slightly later. Magadha was defeated by the Mauryan founder Chandragupta Maurya in 321, the start of the more common Mauryan coinage. The heavy vimshatika has also been classified as a half shatamana.
