MAGADHA: Punchmarked, ca. 450-430 BC, AR standard vimshatika (4.62g), GH-027, Four punches: central 6-arm symbol, sun, bull, and lion, plus 1 bankers' mark on obverse, blank reverse; the standard vimshatika series always has either two lion punches or one lion plus one bull punch (not used on the heavy vimshatika), choice VF-XF, RRR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. All punchmarked coins of Magadha bear the 6-arm symbol and the sun. The first series, with 4 punches, bore a large 6-arm symbol in the center and three smaller punches around, including the sun, heavy vimshatikas of about 5.45g issued circa 450-430 BC, followed by a briefly used standard vimshatika of about 4.70g. These were replaced by a 5-punch series with the karshapana weight of about 3.40g, used roughly 420-350 BC or slightly later. Magadha was defeated by the Mauryan founder Chandragupta Maurya in 321, the start of the more common Mauryan coinage. The heavy vimshatika has also been classified as a half shatamana.
