MAGDEBURG: Free Imperial City, AR 1/24 thaler, 1617, KM-211, in the name of Matthias, Holy Roman Emperor, a pleasing lustrous attractively toned mint state example, PCGS graded MS62, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. In 1617, Magdeburg was a major Protestant city in the Holy Roman Empire, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses with strong anti-Catholic sentiment. The city stood on edge amid growing religious and political tensions that would erupt into the Thirty Years’ War the following year. Though peaceful at the time, Magdeburg was preparing for conflict that would ultimately lead to its devastating destruction in 1631.
