MALAY STATES: PAHANG: Bendahara Sewa Raja Tun Ali, 1806-1857, tin tampang (203.12g), AH1235, Prid--, SS--, 72 x 75mm, Chinese characters jiu li on top, Jawi inscription malik al-`adil (retrograde) / 1235 on plinth, unpublished type, VF-EF. These pieces are variously known as Tampang, Tin Hat, Pyramid or Pagoda money, although the last two names are more common in Perak. They are an early form of currency with a value that was calculated against the amount of tin by weight which could be exchanged for one Spanish Silver dollar. There are a number of views as to when the Tampang first became recognized as money, but they were likely first used in the 17th century and made until the late 19th century.
