MALAY STATES: PAHANG: Muzaffar Shah, 1530-1540, AV kupang (0.67g), Prid--, SS--, Zeno--, sultan / muzaffar / shah // al-sultan / al-`adil, both sides within a border of dots, minor weakness, apparently unique, a remarkable coin of historical significance, EF, RRRR. To our knowledge, this is the first gold coin of Pahang to appear in a public auction. Pridmore knew of only one Pahang gold coin, a mas with the inscription "sultan abdul jalil (sic) // al-sultan al-'adil", which was in the collection of the Taiping Museum in Pekan, Pahang until it was lost during the Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, he allowed the possibility that more are yet to be discovered, for Pahang was a gold-producing country, and a 17th-century Portuguese author recorded the use of gold coins at its ports. This coin can be attributed to Muzaffar Shah of Pahang because among all other Malay rulers with this name, their states either didn't produce gold coins (i.e., Malacca and Perak) or wouldn't have used the title "al-sultan al-'adil" (Johor and Kedah). It is exceedingly rare and an essential piece in any collection of coins of the Malay states.
