JOHORE: Abu Bakar, as Maharaja, 1868-1886, tin cent (11.92g), Kesang, AH1299, SS-38C, Prid--, Zeno--, Jawi legend kesang / ... / 5 katun(?) / sanat 1299 with clear but unread middle lines (possibly a reference to the denomination), uniface, two casting sprues, small edge chip at 6h, a fantastic example of this extremely rare type, VF. Singh notes that on March 10, 1855, Sultan Ali Iskandar Shah was recognized by the British as the sovereign ruler of the Province of Muar-Kesang. He attributes this type to his reign as the examples in his book lacked a legible date. The date on the present example (AH1299 = 1881/2 AD) is very clear and places it during the reign of his son, Abu Bakar. This is the first example of this type that we have encountered.
