PAHANG: Bendahara Sewa Raja Tun Ali, 1806-1857, tin tampang (269.01g), AH1235, Prid-, cf. Singh-14, 79mm, Chinese characters cheng li gong si ("Cheng Li Company") on top, retrograde Jawi-inscribed 1235 and malik al-`adil on plinth, a gorgeous examples of this unpublished type, lightly lustrous with rich glossy patina, Choice AU. See our Auction 48, Lot 1262 for the only other example from this issuer.These pieces are variously known as Tampang, Tin Hat, Pyramid or Pagoda money, although the last two names are more common in Perak. They were an early form of currency with a value that was calculated against the amount of tin by weight which could be exchanged for one Spanish Silver dollar. There are a number of views as to when the Tampang first became recognized as money, but they were likely first used in the 17th century and made until the late 19th century.
