PENANG: SET of 4 tokens, ca. mid-20th century, issued by Ng Fook Thong (in Cantonese; Wu Fu Tang in Mandarin), a historic temple and private school in George Town built by the Ghee Hin secret society; all in aluminum, including $5 (in red, with hand-punched issue number #179), $1 (yellow, #364), 50¢ (green, #21), and 10¢; the first three machine-struck with the name of the temple in Chinese, the denomination, and the English initials, all incuse and filled in with colored paint, the last piece simply hand-punched with NFT / 10 and without paint; all Choice VF, the reverse of the $5 with the Chinese character wu ("five") in ink; set of 4 pieces. Originally Established in 1819, Ng Fook Thong was the first Chinese school (si shu) in colonial Penang and Malaya. The temple is still in existence today but the school has long closed.
