MALTA: Anonymous, AE charity token (tessara), Faenza, ND (16th century), Schembri-4, The Church of San Giovanni Decollato in Faenza, issue for September, October, and November, traces of original mint red, PCGS graded MS62 BN, R-8 (Schembri). This particular issue relating to the seasons and depicting the head of St. John the Beheaded, patron saint of Malta, remains much debated regarding its attribution. Many authors have attributed these tesserae to Maltese coinage due to the presence of the head of St. John. More recently they have been attributed to the city of Faenza and in particular to the Opera Pia di San Giovanni Decollato. Many of these bronze tokens have been found in excavations carried out near the hospital lending credence to the argument.
