MANCHUKUO: silvered AE medal, The 1940 National Shrine Foundation Commemorative Medal, with original clasp, ribbon and gold lettered case of issue, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The medal was instituted in 1940 to commemorate the founding of the National Shrine in Manchukuo. The Japanese Imperial Army erected Shinto shrines in conquered territories to symbolize the expansion of Imperial rule. Plans for this specific shrine were announced in 1935 by the Special Service Bureau of the Kwantung Army. Typically made of silvered bronze, it measures approximately 30mm in diameter. The obverse depicts the shrine building with a Chinese inscription on the reverse reading "Kangde 7th Year (1940) / National Foundation Shrine Commemoration of Creation / July 15th", while the ribbon features a distinctive yellow center flanked by red and white stripes.
