MANGHIT OF BUKHARA: 'Abd al-Ahad, 1886-1910, AV tilla (4.55g), Bukhara-yi Sharif, AH1315, A-3041, as Russian vassal, Extremely Fine. ‘Abd al-Ahad was educated in a Russian military school and later promoted to the rank of adjutant-general in the Russian Army. This early experience influenced his policies later as emir, which led to a much increased level of Russian influence in Bukhara. As the first western educated and open-minded thinking emir he planned political and cultural reforms which met stiff resistance. He changed his pen-name from Mas'ud (fortunate) to 'Ajiz (feeble) and died a disappointed ruler.
