MEXICO: AR medal (14.64g), 1863, 31mm, medal for the French Expedition to Mexico, bust of Napoleon III left with NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR around and BARRE in small letters below bust, all within laurel border // CUMBRES / CERRO.BORREGO / SAN LORENZO / PUEBLA / MEXICO / (anchor) within inner circle with * EXPEDITION DU MEXIQUE * 1862.1863 in band around, all within laurel border, with integral and secondary loop, plain edge, Fine. This medal was authorized on August 29, 1863 and given to members of the French Expeditionary Corps. The battles noted on the reverse were a prelude to the French putting the Austrian Archduke Maximilian on the Mexican throne.
