MEXICO: AR real, 1824-Do, KM-371, assayer RL, "hookneck" eagle type, type I with smooth snake pattern, inverted superscript s in legend, Fine, RRR. This example was published as a plate coin in "Hookneck : El Aguila de Perfil" by Hubbard & O'Harrow as the ex Jaime Varon (Dave Busse Collection) example. This rare type was only struck at the Durango mint and all known examples show heavy to moderate wear. There were 12 known examples at time of the publication of the "Hookneck : El Aguila de Perfil" book, but two other examples have since been discovered. A great rarity in the Mexican series and rarely offered in public sales.
