MEXICO: Maximilian, 1864-1867, AV 20 pesos, 1866-Mo, KM-389, Fr-62, some hairlines, one-year type, mintage of 8,274 pieces, EF, R. Archduke Maximilian of Austria was tapped by the French to become the new ruler of Mexico. He said he would only take the throne if he were wanted by the Mexican populace. The French organized a sham election to this effect and told Maximilian that the people had shown their support for him. He foolishly believed the French, and took the throne. In reality, he was hated by the people as a royalist foreigner. He was eventually captured by Juarez and his soldiers in 1867, and shortly after, executed.
