MU'TAZILITES: Muhammad b. Ma'zuz, fl. 850-851, AR dirham (2.28g), Ijerhan, AH236, A-433G, also citing Muhammad in the obverse center and an uncertain name below the obverse field (seems to be Abu Hudayn or something similar), the first known coin of Muhammad b. Ma'zuz and of great historic importance, as it proves that Ma'zuz was the name of a local official opposed to the contemporary Idrisid rulers, then Yahya I b. Muhammad (AH234-249); unique and of wonderful relevance! VF The phrase "al-'adl lillah" ("justice belong to God") is associated with the philosophical Mu'tazilite branch of Sunni Islam, as demonstrated by Eustache in his catalog of Idrisid and related coins. The better known related coins cite Ma'zuz as the son of Talut, an uncommon name, but known on a few various Islamic coins, including the copper Tahirid coins of Bukhara dated AH209. The best known is Abu Talut, who was associated with the Kharijite uprising under Qatari b. al-Fuja'a, who struck reasonably common drachms in southern Iran circa AH75-78, and it was presumed that for unknown reasons Ma'zuz promoted a Kharijite connection. This coin, citing Ma'zuz's son Muhammad, whereas the dirham of the Wargha dated AH222 cites Ma'zuz without his patronymic, suggests that Talut was merely Ma'zuz's fathers name and not the Kharijite official with Qatari b. al-Fuja'a.
