MUGHAL: Alamgir II, 1754-1759, AR rupee (11.45g), Murshidabad, year 6, KM-460.15, last Mughal issue at Murshidabad, which was acquired by the East India Company about one year after the death of Alamgir II in November 1759 (Jamada II AH1173), VF, R. This type is known with the Hijri year 1173, struck either before or after the death of Alamgir II in the 6th month of that year. An exceedingly rare issue dated AH1174 and of the finest engraving style, has been confirmed as the first British issue actually struck at Murshidabad (Stevens-1.18), and the only known specimen was struck from dies different from those used for this piece on both sides. Nonetheless, as the EIC took over Bengal in 1757, two years before the death of Alamgir II, the ongoing coinage at the Murshidabad mint from 1757 to 1760 may have come under some degree of British influence.
