MUGHAL: Aurangzeb, 1658-1707, AR rupee (11.21g), Assam, AH1073 year 5, KM-300.—, extremely rare mint, only recently published, probably the 3rd or 4th known specimen, probably all of the same date and regnal year, 1 testmark, VF, RRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection. The Mughal forces under Mir Jumla occupied the capital of Assam in 1662/63, forcing the local raja, Jayadhvaja Simha, to pay tribute to the Mughal Emperor, and it is possibly that this coin was struck for that payment. The mint was originally read as Sham, but a recent discovery revealed the alif before the name, so the mint is Assâm (thanks to Paul Stevens for this information).
