MULTAN: AR rupee (11.44g), Multan, AH1172 year 7, KM-241, in the name of Alamgir II, 2 testmarks, bold VF, RR. The advance of the Maratha forces appears to have reached the edge of Multan shortly before the end of AH1172, though their actual occupation of the city did not occur until 11 Rabi' I 1173, some 10 weeks after the end of 1172. Since the style of the Maratha issues in the name of the Mughal Alamgir II and his controversial successor Shah Jahan III are stylistically so different from the Durrani issues of Multan at the same period, it can be assumed that they were produced outside the official mint of Multan, perhaps with the Maratha forces outside the city walls. KM and Wiggins list only AH1173 in the name of Alamgir II as a Maratha issue. It is, of course, always possible that the coin was minted in 1173 but the die-sinker inadvertently engraved 1172 instead of 1173, a simple typo. See our auction 16, lot 1084, for the Maratha issue in the name of Shah Jahan III.
