NAPLES: Ferdinando I di Borbone, 1816-1825, AE medal (28.04g), d'Auria-132, 37mm bronze medal by Brandt, commemorating the restoration of the Real Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, front façade // interior view, CAROL III FUND / FERD I REST above, the names of impresario Barbaia and architect Niccolini below, lovely prooflike surfaces, Unc. Teatro San Carlo is the oldest continuously active opera venue in the world. It opened in 1737 but was destroyed in a fire in 1816. Under the direction of impresario Domenico Barbaia, it was rebuilt in ten months and reopened in January of 1817. Stendhal once said of the theater, "There is nothing in all Europe, I won't say comparable to this theatre, but which gives the slightest idea of what it is like, it dazzles the eyes, it enraptures the soul."
