NETHERLANDS: AE medal, 1862, Pirks-877, 38mm, "Shogunate Government Visit to the Netherlands" original medal, NIPPON TAI-KOEN-NO SEI-SI HOLLANDA NI KITAROE, dates 1609 / 1862 above and below with Royal Dutch arms and Japanese arms and flag at center // ONDER DE REGERING VAN WILLEM III KONING DER NEDERLANDEN G.H.V.L. (during the reign of King Willem III of the Netherlands G.H.V.L.) with Japanese inscription at center which translates as "with closeness and understanding two countries deepen their relationship", UNC, R, ex John Jay Pittman Collection, Lot 2370. In 1862, the Shogunate government sent students to the Netherlands to study naval technology. Enomoto Takeaki, Nishi Amane and Tsuda Mamichi, were sent and studied shipbuilding, navigation, medicine, law and other fields. After the Meiji Restoration, Nishi and Tsuda became pioneers in the introduction of philosophy, law and other fields. In addition, a delegation sent from the Shogunate government to Europe also visited the Netherlands the same year and were exuberantly welcomed. It was very significant for many Japanese, including Fukuchi Gen'ichiro (Fukuchi Ochi) and Fukuzawa Yukichi, to see the things and systems in European countries. The date 1609 refers to first official Dutch VOC delegation to Japan. Restrikes struck in 2009 exist, but can be distingusihed by the presence of two privy marks at 06:00 on reverse rather than one.
