NETHERLANDS: AE medalet (6.47g), 1872, BM-68, 25mm bronze medalet commemorating the Capture of Brielle; "1572 /1872" above // DAGERAAD ONZER VRIJHEID in outer legend, 1 / APRIL / 1572 at center, a superb mint state example! PCGS graded MS65 RB. On April 1, 1572, Dutch Calvinist rebels, known as the Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars), captured the undefended port town of Brielle (Den Briel), a pivotal moment in the Eighty Years' War against Spain that marked the real beginning of the Dutch Revolt and led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.
