NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: AE 1/2 duit (1.06g), cf. Zeno-314064, made from 1753 VOC 1/2 duit of Utrecht, with chiseled square central hole for stringing, F-VF. On December 20, 1754, the Dutch East India Company passed a resolution to send half duits worth 20,000 florins to Surabaya and Gresik. These coins were to be modified by punching out a square hole so that they could be strung together and circulated in competition with the local pitis coins of East Java and Bali. Very few examples with the hole are known today.
