NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: AE tang (6.07g), ND (1658-60), Sc-20b, 25 x 10mm, United East India Company (VOC) emergency issue in the shape of a larin (i.e., hairpin or fish hook money), both ends stamped with a sword intersecting a laurel wreath, very rare, VF Due to the shortage of small coins in circulation, the Batavian government decided on November 9, 1658 to produce copper "tangen" in the same shape as the larin circulated across the Indian Ocean. However, as the master swordsmith at Batavia Castle found copper too difficult to work with, it was replaced on May 28, 1660 with tin.
