NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: LOT of 468 coins, large lot of United East India Company (VOC) copper coins including; Utrecht 1/2 duits 1752-57 (28), Utrecht duits 1742-93 (330), and Gelderland duits 1731-92 (110), average quality examples, most identified by Scholten catalog numbers and worked up in 2x2 holders, retail value $1400, lot of 468 coins. The Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) or Dutch United East India Company issued copper duits in the 17th and 18th centuries in the territory of the Dutch Republic and overseas colonies. The single largest recipient of Dutch duit coins was Java. As the monetary unit was also widespread throughout the Malay archipelago, the word duit eventually was absorbed into Malay vocabulary becoming a slang word for 'money'.
