NETHERLANDS WEST INDIES: Dutch Republic, AR 1/4 gulden, Utrecht, 1794, KM-2, Sch-1355a, W above FOED variety, a superb lightly toned lustrous example! PCGS graded MS65. In 1792 the Directorate of the West Indies requested the King have coins struck as was done for the East Indies. With resolution 31-12-1793 this request was granted. The weight and silver content had to be in line with Dutch coins, although no quarter guilders were produced for circulation in the Dutch Provinces. The intention was to put these coins into circulation at an inflated value, although it is uncertain if this was actually done. It is certain that 8,000 of the mintage of 20,150 of these quarter guilders were shipped to Gold Coast. This type was minted in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
