NGUYEN DYNASTY (ANNAM): brass religious amulet (7.02g), Sylvester-4/A/D, 32mm, emulating the phi long-type kim tiên medal of the early 20th century, ngu vi ton ong ("Five Honored Gentlemen") around flaming pearl // dragon rampant left among clouds, attached at top & bottom with red cord & tassels in six beaded braids, EF-AU, ex John Sylvester Jr. Collection. The Five Honored Gentlemen (or Commanders) are deities in the traditional religion of Tu Phu ("Four Palaces"). They rank below the supreme Mother Goddess Dao Mau and the Four Mother Goddesses of the four realms (i.e., Heaven, Mountains, Water, and Earth), and are worshipped in various temples across Vietnam. This type of amulet is reportedly worn by persons who act as a medium with them.
