ex Joseph Lepczyk Auction 52, Lot 1868 (with tag).

ADDITIONAL REFERENCE: GATT 06-4T-212X66 and is only the second one of this variety seen according to the author.

The image of John the Baptist's decapitated head refers to the story of Salome, the step-daughter of Herod Antipas, sub-king of Galilee. She pleased King Herod so much with her dancing that he promised to give her anything she wanted. She is thought to have said "Bring me the head of John the Baptist on a platter." True to Herod's word, John was then beheaded.
