OSNABRÜCK: AR reichstaler, Osnabrück, 1633, Dav-4553, Ahlström-4c, Kennepohl-221a, Death of Gustav II Adolf (of Sweden) type, scarce variety with divided date in lower inner circle, Fine

NOTE: Added September 10, 2026 - Faint tooling in obverse margin

The Swedish occupation of Osnabrück occurred during the Thirty Years' War, when Swedish forces captured the city on September 11, 1633 after a siege, ending a period of Catholic League control and restoring Protestant management; the occupation effectively ended in 1643 when Osnabrück was declared a neutral, demilitarized zone under Swedish protection to host the Peace of Westphalia negotiations. This type served as a tool to honor the fallen Swedish king who was killed in the Battle of Lützen in November 1632 and to rally support for the Protestant cause. By portraying him as a martyr, the Swedish administration reinforced the legitimacy of their continued presence and military campaigns in German lands. The reverse features the Biblical reference "IOHAN 10 / EIN GVTER HIRT / LESSET SEIN / LEBEN FVR DIE / SCHAFE" over the town name "OSNABRV." This directly quotes John 10:11 ("A good shepherd gives his life for the sheep") and frames the Swedish king as a Christ-like savior who sacrificed his life to defend the Protestant "flock" from the Catholic Holy Roman Empire.
