PAHANG: Bendahara Sewa Raja Wan Ahmad, 1863-1882, tin ½ tampang (17.64g), SS-—, "tin hat money", plain obverse, natural flan hole as made plus several additional casting defects, F-VF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. These are variously known as a Tampang, Tin Hat, Pyramid or Pagoda money, although the latter two names are more common in Perak. They are an early form of currency with a value that was calculated against the amount of tin by weight which could be exchanged for one Spanish Silver dollar. There are a number of views as to when the Tampang first became recognized as money, but they were likely first used in the 17th century and made until the late 19th century.
