PAPAL STATES: Clement X, 1670-1676, AE medal, 1672 year III, Börner-1218, Spink-1318, 39mm bronze medal by Giovanni Hamerani; CLEMENS X PON MAX A III around bust of Pope facing right, wearing a papal tiara and a mozzetta, HAMERANVS. F. on truncation // VIVIFICAT ET BEAT above the depiction of a man named Cimon being suckled at the breast of his daughter Pero while in prison (a well-known story in classical mythology and art), typically referred to as Roman Charity (or Caritas romana), later strike likely in the 19th century, a wonderful mint state example! PCGS graded MS64 BN. The legend tells that Cimon was sentenced to death by starvation, and his daughter Pero, having been granted access to visit him but forbidden from bringing food, secretly nourished her father with her breast milk to keep him alive. The act, intended as an example of filial piety and extreme devotion, so moved the judges that they pardoned Cimon. This theme was a popular subject for European painters from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
