PARTHIAN KINGDOM: Parthamaspates, AD 116, AR drachm (3.81g), Shore-423, Sunrise-449, diademed bust left, short curly beard, wearing tiara, EF. After spending much of his life in Roman exile, Parthamaspates accompanied the emperor Trajan on the latter's campaign to conquer Parthia. Trajan originally planned to annex Parthia, but ultimately placed Parthamaspates on his father's throne as a Roman client in 116. Following Roman withdrawal from the area, Osroes easily defeated Parthamaspates and reclaimed the Parthian throne. After Parthamaspates again fled to them, the Romans, as a consolation, granted him the co-rule of Osroene, a small client state between Asia Minor and Syria.
