PAURAVAS OF KAUSAMBI: Mahindramitra, 1st century BC, arsenical potin unit (4.60g), Pieper-1386 (this piece), lion to right with a five-hooded cobra, surmounted by a parasol on right, Brahmi legend (rajno poravasa) mahidamitasa // bushy railed tree, Indradhvaja and Kharosthi letter -bha- on left, divided circle and Kharosthi letter -ra- on right, XF, RRR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. The few known coins of this tribal Punjab state are all extremely rare. Altogether less than ten Paurava coins have been published. This is probably the same tribe to which king Poros belonged, who is known for his hard-fought resistance to the invasion of Alexander the Great. The only example of this type on CoinArchives is several grades worse than this magnificent piece (sold by CNGallery Auction 45, lot 84, in August 2023).
