At the end of President Castilla's term of office, General Echenique succeeded him; but in 1854, Castilla placed himself at the head of a revolution, and again found himself in power. A new Constitution was promulgated in 1856, the tribute of the Indians and slavery were abolished, and the general population ceased to be taxed!
