PERU: Republic, AR medal (10.58g), 1821, Fonrobert-8998, 28mm unsigned silver proclamation medal for Independence from Spain, radiant sunface with "LIMA LIBRE JURO SU INDEPENDENCIA EN 28 DE JULIO DE 1821" around // BAJO LA / PROTECCION / DEL EGERCITO / LIBERTADOR / DEL PERU / MANDADO / POR SAN / MARTIN within laurel wreath, reverse rim ding, somewhat crude, engrailed edge, VF-EF, S. This is the first use of the republican sunface iconography in Peruvian coins and exonumia. Jose de San Martin was an Argentine general who led the independence movement for Argentina, Chile, and Peru against the Spanish. He was involved in many battles, ultimately leading to him sailing to attack the Spanish stronghold of Lima. He gained partial control of the city on July 12, 1821. San Martin was declared the Protector of Peru, and a declaration of independence was issued on July 28, 1821.
