PHILIPPINES: AR 'anting-anting' medal (33.42g), Honeycutt-1428, YL-5, 41mm, angel blowing trumpet over fishes leaping from waves, radiant All-Seeing Eye above, fictitious date 1000 below // St. Joseph standing and carrying sack, sun to left, crescent and stars to right, SENOR PATRIARCA / SN JOSE, lightly cleaned, XF. Anting-anting are religious talismans used as tangible representations of Filipino beliefs. They are crudely made and were supposedly produced in Laguna Province. One source gives their dates of manufacture as approximately 1950 to the mid-80's. The dates sometimes represented on the medals are fictitious. There are many different obverse and reverse types, and were paired to create many combinations, much like the Javanese gobogs.
