The Exposición de las Filipinas was held in Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid, Spain from 30 June to 30 October of 1887. Buildings erected for the exhibition such as the Palacio de Cristal survive to the present day. Thirty Gold Medals, seventy-one Silver Medals, one hundred and ten Bronze Medals, and three hundred and twenty-three Honorable Mentions medals were awarded.Melecio Figueroa (1842-1903) was a Filipino sculptor and engraver whose design was featured in a previous coin series of the Philippine peso. In 1903, he joined a competition for the Philippine peso coinage system in 1903 and his design was selected as the winner. Figueroa's designs were featured on Philippine coinage until the 1960s.
