POLAND: Stanislaw Leszczynski, AE medal (52.76g), 1755, Raczynski-454, Hutten-Czapski-2734, 47mm bronze medal by Anna Maria Saint-Urbain, Erecting of the Louis XV Monument in Nancy, France; STANISLAUS I D G REX POL MAG DUX LIT LOTH ET BAR around bust of Stanislaus I facing left, signature A. M. S. V. below bust // monumental sculpture of Louis XV upon decorative plinth, with two allegorical figures seated at the base; perimeter legend UTRIUSQUE IMMORTALITATI above, CIVITAS NANCLIANA / MDCCLV in exergue below; signature A. M. S. V. on base of plinth; all within a beaded border, XF The 1738 Treaty of Vienna that closed out the War of the Polish Succession gave the Duchy of Upper Lorraine, of which Nancy was the capital, to Stanislaus I Leszczynski as a consolation for losing the throne of Poland to Augustus III. Stanislaus had briefly been the King of Poland and was father-in-law to King Louis XV of France. The agreement was that the Duchy would pass to the French Crown upon Stanislaus' death (which occurred in 1766). He directed the building of the Place Stanislas in Nancy, anchored by the City Hall and the Ducal Seat of Government building, as an homage to his son-in-law Louis XV. A bronze statue of Louis XV was created by Barthélémy Guibal and Paul-Louis Cyfflé and erected in the center of the square in 1755. The statue fell victim to the French Revolution.Marie Anne de Saint Urbain, the daughter of Ferdinand de Saint Urbain and brother of Claude Augustin, was born at Nancy in 1711. She, like her father, became a medallist of note. She married Charles Benoît Vaultrin, the king's councillor in the bailiwick of Château-Salins. Marie Anne followed Duke Francis III of Lorraine to Vienna, where she died at an advanced age. Marie Anne de Saint Urbain is one of the few female medallists of this or, until relatively recently, any other period.
