Price, Martin & Bluma Trell, Coins and Their Cities: Architecture on the ancient coins of Greece, Rome, and Palestine, London, 1977, Vecchi Publishers, 298 pages, hardcover with dustjacket. At the end of this book is a full list cataloging representations of buildings on coins of the ancient world, omitting only the city of Rome because a list of building types can be easily found in such works as Roman Imperial Coinage and Coins of the Roman Empire. The text is essentially a discussion of the more important examples. It is lavishly illustrated, with good color plates and adequate half-tones. The coins illustrate a wide range of buildings, though naturally the principal public buildings, especially temples, predominate. For many buildings they afford the only evidence that has survived. The authors emphasize this, and explain carefully the conventions inevitably used by the engravers in producing their representations of buildings in such small dimensions.
