QAJAR: Agha Muhammad Khan, 1779-1797, AR rupi (11.44g), Mashhad, AH1211, A-2844, the Zand couplet / mint & phrase ya muhammad, lovely strike, VF to EF, RRR. Mashhad was still under the rule of the Afsharid Shahrukh, but in 1211 Agha Muhammad conquered the city and cruelly executed Shahrukh. The city was returned to the Durrani ruler Shah Zaman later that year, and it is recorded that 30,000 silver rupis were struck for Agha Muhammad (his type C) in exchanged for the permission to retain Mashhad. The city was permanently seized by the Qajars in 1218.
