QAJAR REBEL, Ahmad Khan Donboli, 1790-1791, AR riyal (12.74g), Tabriz, AH1205, A-2840, lovely bold strike, choice EF, RR, ex. Richard Accola collection. As type C but without the evocation ya Mohammad, issued during the revolt of Ahmad Khan Donboli in Iranian Azerbaijan. It appears that Ahmad Khan introduced the riyal denomination in 1204, adopted by Agha Muhammad Khan at all his mints beginning about 1206. The origin of the riyal standard remains undetermined, but the name derives from the Spanish real.
