QARA-KHITAY: Yelü Yilie, 1150-1164, AE fals (3.33g), [Samarqand], ND, A-3492, citing Yelü Yilie only by his generic Qara Khitay title gür khan (partly off flan) and his title al-khaqan al-'adil on the obverse, the Great Seljuq Sanjar as al-sultan al-a'zam on the reverse; this appears to be the first known example of this type, somewhat crude VF, RRR. Stylistically similar to type A-3393 of the Qarakhanid ruler at Samarqand, Mahmud III b. Muhammad. Yelü Yilie (or Ilie) was the third ruler of the Western Liao from China. He also issued cash coins with the reign title Xu Xing in Chinese (cf. SARC Auction 23, Lot 691).
