QARAKHANID: Sulayman b. Yusuf, 1031-1056, AR dirham (3.43g), Yarkand, A-3359, Kochnev, calligraphic style, late series (circa AH440-448), similar to a dirham of Kashghar with date 44x (probably AH443, sold in our Auction 45, lot 2004) and very different from the Kashghar dirhams of Sulayman b. Yusuf with earlier dates; apparently the first known dirham of Yarkand, in Xinjiang province of China, from the Eastern Khanate (after AH433); lovely strike, unique, VF, RRRR. Yarkand was an active Qarakhanid mint from about AH405 until 431. The only later examples are this piece and an alleged broad copper "dirham" from the late 570s or 580a (possibly a misdescribed late item of the relatively common Uzkand mint).
