QARAKHANIDS IN BALKH & TIRMIDH: Khusrawshah, 1179-1186, AE mansuri dirham (3.25g), Qunduz, DM, A-3478D, ruler cited as al-sultan al-a'zam rukn al-dunya wa'l-din khusrawshah, with the mint name in the margin around the reverse, unpublished, Fine, RRR. This is the earliest known coin with the mint name Qunduz, formerly Walwaliij, which had been an important Ghaznavid, Great Seljuq, and Ghorid of Bamiyan mint, last recorded on gold coins dated 605 (type A-1806). The previously known earliest coin with the name Qunduz are gold dinars of the Khwarizmshah Muhammad b. Takish, dated in the early 610s. The name qunduz derives from the Persian kohan-dez, which means "old fortress".
