RAS AL-MANDAB: AR riyal, ND, KM-371, Mitch-1492, Gadoury-19, Hafner-114, Arabic text, Shaykh Sa'id Ras al-Mandab, in a circular indent counterstamped on a Maria Thersa thaler 1780 restrike, very rare type for this area in southwestern Yemen, one of the most elusive counterstamps on a Maria Theresa thaler and a superb example, Extremely Fine, RRR. In 1868, a French company purchased the port of Sheikh Sa'eed (Shaykh Sa'id) together with approximately 400,000 acres of surrounding land from the local tribe. In 1869, the purchase was annulled, as the purchase price had been only partially paid. By the end of the 19th century, the port was described as French, British, or Turkish territory, depending on the map consulted. The fort of Shaykh Sa'id was located on the border between Ottoman Yemen and the British Aden Protectorate, at the mouth of the Red Sea. Considered a spurious issue.
