REBELLION AT AL-MAWSIL: Ishaq b. Kundaj, 889-891, AR dirham (2.91g), Ra's al-'Ayn, AH277, A-669L, Zeno-377669 (this piece), Ishaq b. Kundâj was originally an 'Abbasid military office of considerable importance, but in 889 (AH276) he rebelled at al-Mawsil against the caliphate and struck coins with his title dhu'l-sayfayn ("possessor of the two swords") which he had originally acquired from the caliiph al-Mu'tamiid. Unique and unpublished! VF, RRRR.

All previously known gold and silver coins of Ishaq b. Kundaj, cited only as Dhu'l-Sayfayn, were struck at al-Mawsil AH276-278 and this is the first known coins of Ra's al-'Ayn, which was located about 150 miles west of al-Mawsil. This example shows that he still nominally cited the calph al-Mutadid and his heirs, plus the unidentified Muhammad below the obverse.

NOTE: We had this attributed differently in the printed auction catalog. The description was updated on April 27, 2026.
