REPUBLIC OF NORTH MEXICO:, AE 2 cents, 1890, KM-NC22, contemporary fantasy issue, a superb brown lustrous example! NGC graded MS65 BN. According to Oscar J. Martínez in his book "Troublesome Border" (2006), "two aborted filibustering schemes hatched in Southern California in the late nineteenth century illustrate the role of the U.S. press in exposing and stopping such activities. In 1888 Los Angeles resident Col. J. K. Mulkey organized the "Order of the Golden Field", a secret society with branches in Texas and Arizona. The group intended to plant U.S. filibusters in Baja California posing as ordinary workers, farmers, and miners who in time would foment insurrection and proclaim the peninsula the 'Republic of Northern Mexico'. The flag on this coin is nearly identical to the contemporary published flag of the "Order of the Golden Field." The English language on this coin, and very similar reverse design to the American "Union Shield" type two cent coins of 1864-1873, support that this is likely an issue of the "Order of the Golden Field."
